The Problem
Optimum Dry Ice Blasting was called to an electrical substation in Birmingham following a fire associated with contamination inside the electrical cabinets.
Years of accumulated grime and contamination had built up around sensitive electrical components. One particular problem was that the contamination had become so heavy that electricians were struggling to read important identification tags within the cabinets.
Simply using a more aggressive cleaning method wasn’t an option. The identification markings needed to remain intact and legible.

The Solution – Gentle CO₂ Snow Blasting
For this application, we used a particularly gentle form of dry ice cleaning known as CO₂ snow blasting.
The process provides a controlled cleaning action that is ideally suited to delicate electrical components, wiring and intricate areas within electrical cabinets.
Crucially, our technicians were able to remove the accumulated grime from identification tags without removing or damaging the important identifiers underneath. This allowed electricians to once again clearly identify components while preserving the original labeling.
Snow blasting also introduces no water and no abrasive blast media into the cabinets. The CO₂ sublimates into gas, leaving no secondary blasting media behind.
The Result
The electrical cabinets were systematically deep cleaned, including areas that would have been extremely difficult and time-consuming to clean effectively by hand.
The project restored visibility of important identification markings while removing accumulated contamination from around sensitive electrical equipment.
This Birmingham project demonstrates how dry ice and CO₂ snow blasting can provide a gentle but effective solution for electrical cabinet, switch-gear and substation cleaning.
